The Cervical & Vagus Nerve Connection?! – A NYC Chiropractor/Applied Kinesiologist/NeuroKinetic Therapist Explains

I’ve been pondering the possible connection between the Cervical nerve and the Vagus nerve.

The Vagus nerve is the tenth cranial nerve or CN X, and interfaces with parasympathetic control of the heart, lungs, and digestive tract. The Vagus nerve supplies motor parasympathetic fibers to all the organs (except the adrenal glands), from the neck down to the second segment of the transverse colon. The Vagus also controls a few skeletal muscles in the neck or cervical area. The Vagus nerves are paired; however, they are normally referred to in the singular. It is the longest nerve of the autonomic nervous system.

The first and second cervical nerves are responsible for innervation of the head, face, inner middle ear, sinuses, eyes, upper neck, auditory nerves and other areas. The cervical nerves C3-C7 bear the responsibility of innervating the neck, shoulders, thyroid, teeth, tonsils, outer ear, nose, mouth, vocal cords, and more, with some of their individual responsibilities outlined below. The fourth cervical nerve innervates the thoracic diaphragm, leading to the creation of the surgical mnemonic “Cut C4, breathe no more.”

The Vagus Nerve (also known as the “wandering nerve”) exits the upper cervical spine and descends down to the heart and the stomach and the rest of the digestive system. We know of cases where severe massage of the neck muscles affects digestion and respiration.

The Vagus nerve travels along the side of the cervical vertebrae; fibers of the cervical nerves and the vagus innervate similar neck muscles. Misalignment of the upper cervical vertebrae affects the nerves that innervate those muscles. A biofeedback can affect the Vagus.

A relatively new patient made me ponder this possible connection: he had fallen on his head 30 yrs ago. He complained of neck pain, gall bladder pain, low back pain, walking dis-ease, excessive hunger (drinks lots of veggie and fruit juices). He looked emaciated, held his head forward and his shoulders elevated. His X-rays show facet problems w C1-2 vertebra and a slipping forward of C2 on C3; he admits that he self-adjusts his neck.
On examination, found a bilateral weak psoas (a muscle involved in walking) which suggests a fixation of the occipital bone and C1 vertebrae and then also a fixation of C2 and C3.

https://drvittoriarepetto.wordpress.com/2010/12/13/spinal-pain-not-being-helped-see-an-applied-kinesiologist-it-may-be-a-fixation/

I found abnormal sacral movement- a Sacral Wooble, released the erector spinal muscles, adjusted two cranial bones and  worked on acu-points for gall bladder, spleen and liver as well as lymphatic points
His neck’s range of motion is better and walking is not uncomfortable.
Gave instructions on how to track his head back without elevating his chin and told him to stop adjusting his own neck. My dietary advice was to stop juicing and eat solid veggies and more protein.
I emailed him  a youtube video on how to hold his head and another one on the dangers of self-adjustment.

That night and the next 2 days I get emails saying that though he thought I didn’t do a lot; he was not hungry and he had two really good bowel movements and his breathing and his voice is stronger. He was looking forward to his next visit.

Forward lean is a  constant problem with texting, working at a computer and just bad posture. Note that the doctor in the first video mentions that more forward lean, the more years of forward lean, the more medications the patient is on; more stress on cervical…more stress on Vagus?/…more problems w/ organ function.?!!.

Chronic Inflammation and How Chiropractic & Applied Kinesiology Can Help.

First what is inflammation?

Acute inflammation is our body’s natural reaction to infection, trauma, irritants and other hurtful stimuli. Inflammation is an innate reaction that helps remove the hurtful stimulus out and starts the healing process. The signs of inflammation are pain, heat, redness and sometimes loss of function.

However inflammation becomes problematic when it becomes chronic. The body goes into a vicious cycle; creating more of an inflammatory response to get rid of the chronic problem which causes tissue damage and has dire consequences. This can be aggravated by certain foods and lifestyles; too enough sleep, too much stress, muscle/joint/spinal dysfunction, a diet full of processed nutrient – poor foods, overuse of prescription and OTC drugs, food allergies/intolerances, poor gut microbiology and leaky gut.

Chronic inflammation can also be the result of an autoimmune response where the immune system mistakes healthy tissue for unhealthy pathogens.

A lot of people don’t find out that they have chronic inflammation until they’re diagnosed with a disease that’s associated with it such as atherosclerosis, degenerative or herniated disc problems, celiac disease, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease and even cancer.

Some other signs include: high blood pressure, fatigue, skin problems, constipation or diarrhea, joint pain, shortness of breath and indigestion.

chronic-inflammation

So it is important to help the body get rid of any chronic inflammation.

Chiropractic and applied kinesiology are some of the best tools you could ever ask for in the fight against chronic inflammation. Studies have shown that adjustments help reduce the production of two inflammatory cytokines, which can reduce inflammation throughout the body.

Here are 2 such studies: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4291009/ Tissue Damage Markers after a Spinal Manipulation in Healthy Subjects: A Preliminary Report of a Randomized Control   http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24450367  Changes in biochemical markers of pain perception and stress response after spinal manipulation.

As an applied Kinesiologist, I deal with increasing blood and lymphatic flow to the spine, muscles and joints and organs.

https://drvittoriarepetto.wordpress.com/2014/12/20/a-nyc-chiropractor-talks-about-the-triad-of-health-in-applied-kinesiology/

I can also assist patients in the fight against chronic inflammation in other ways too.

Chronic inflammation responds very well to lifestyle changes. I can advise how to begin an anti-inflammation diet. Vitamin D, Omega 3’s and magnesium as well as other supplements may also provide relief from chronic inflammation.

Eliminating food allergies or intolerances, improving helpful gut bacteria microbiology, improving leaky gut and fixing spastic intestinal valves are a big part of decreasing chronic inflammation. https://drvittoriarepetto.wordpress.com/2010/05/15/it%e2%80%99s-not-a-food-allergy-maybe-it%e2%80%99s-a-food-intolerance/

Exercise, proper nutrition and regular chiropractic care can go a long way toward treating a variety of health problems, including chronic inflammation.

Testimonial From A Friend w/ Gall Bladder Problems That I Helped

Vittoria – so I think you remember, and I want to THANK YOU for all your advice regarding gall bladder cleaning – I want to post about this too on Facebook and thank you, if that is OK – I had the six month followup on my gall bladder – and while I am not 100% clean, my doctor said he had never seen such rapid improvement – which he said had to be the diet on top of the Ursodial medicine – the scans are just incredible – from a gall bladder full of sludge and stones, to one with such a scattering of tiny sparkles, remnants of what was there and no edema or wall swelling and no issues with the bile ducts – I am still going to continue with ursodial another 6 months at least, and of course, olive oil, artichoke, healthy fats, mostly vegetarian and fish – but really the changes are incredible and what should take two years, took about 6 months – really thank you – Mike

How a NYC Chiropractor/Applied Kinesiologist/NeuroKineticTherapy Practitioner Treats Migraine Headaches

Are you having intense throbbing or a pulsing sensation in one area of your head and experiencing nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.

Does your headache last for hours to days and is it so severe that all you can think about is finding a dark, quiet place to lie down.

Then it a good bet that you are suffering from a migraine headache.

Some find that their migraine is preceded or accompanied by sensory warning symptoms (aura), such as flashes of light, blind spots, or tingling in your arm or leg.

Unfortunately a lot of migraine sufferers take pharmaceuticals which only work 50% of the time, only that mask symptoms and cause side effects which include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, liver toxicity, muscle weakness and an increased risk of strokes and heart attacks.

migraine

In my practice, I have work with numerous people affected by migraines and I use a combination of holistic therapies to give my patients relief from their migraines.

In my practice, I have found some of the causes to be

  • Cervical and Cranial Misalignment/Malfunction
  • Neck Muscle Imbalances – Facilitating ones compensating for inhibited/weak ones
  • TMJ – Jaw joint & muscle imbalances
  • Stress
  • Liver toxicity
  • Food allergies/ Intolerances
  • Imbalance in Organ and Vascular Function
  • Nutritional Deficiencies such as Magnesium, B complex vitamins, Vitamin D and CoQ10

A lot of migraine sufferers have a combination of these causal factors.

In my practice, I check for upper cervical mis-alignments which can irritate nerves to the head and refer painful impulses.

Jammed cranial sutures can also affect both cranial and cervical nerves and the muscles of the head and cause pain.

Poor posture can cause cervical and cranial problems and therefore a patient’s posture is addressed and corrected.

Neck, shoulder and jaw muscles are tested for imbalances where facilitated muscles are compensating for inhibited muscles or where hypo-tonic  or hyper-tonic muscles affect the alignment of the spine, jaw or skull.

https://drvittoriarepetto.wordpress.com/2010/05/17/cranial-sacral-therapy-in-applied-kinesiology/

Organ and vascular mis-function (not pathology), food allergies, intolerances, and liver toxicity can affect the processes of organs to work efficiently, decrease blood flow, affect the immune response and increase toxics in the body.

I use neuro-lymphatics and neuro-vascular pts and acupressure pts to increase the function and energy of the body.

I can also use these points to help the patient deal with stress and also suggest lifestyle changes to help them cope with the cause of their stress

https://drvittoriarepetto.wordpress.com/2011/02/16/how-an-applied-kinesiologist-uses-neuro-lympathics-to-improve-health/

https://drvittoriarepetto.wordpress.com/2011/07/29/how-a-nyc-applied-kinesiologist-uses-neurovascular-pts-for-better-physical-and-emotional-wellbeing/

I check to see if the patient is eating foods that aggravate their migraine symptoms; these can include food allergies and intolerances such as gluten or dairy. Allergies and intolerances create problems in your gut and increase toxicity in the body.

https://drvittoriarepetto.wordpress.com/2010/05/15/it%e2%80%99s-not-a-food-allergy-maybe-it%e2%80%99s-a-food-intolerance/

I encourage patient to only eat whole, natural un-processed fresh foods and get rid of artificial sweeteners, foods with high fructose corn syrup and other additives.

A lot of migraine sufferers befit from nutritional supplementation and a liver detox to increase body function

Findings Fortify Low Riboflavin, Migraine Link

No Insurance, No Problem. Reasonable Rates with Dr. Repetto – NYC Chiropractor / Applied Kinesiologist

Hi!, I’m Dr. Vittoria Repetto, a native downtown New Yorker and Doctor of Chiropractor and an Applied Kinesiologist who has been in practice since 1987. And recently a Neuro Kinetic Therapy practitioner.

I treat the whole person, not just your symptoms. I know that balancing your structure, your biochemistry and your mental outlook all contribute to your well-being.

Each of my 75 minute long wellness sessions is unique and composed of interrelated holistic therapies that work together to achieve maximum benefits.

I am not affiliated with any insurance network.

If I belonged to a network I would have to see patients in an assembly line fashion (10-15 minutes). I would not be able to take time to, for example, balance the muscle pull on your spine or extremities or to do cranial sacral work or acupressure work or talk to you about your nutritional needs or suggest exercises or lifestyle changes related to your condition.

Therefore I ask that my patients pay me directly and I fill out their insurance claim form and they get reimbursed by their insurance company if they are allowed to go “out of network” by their policy.

I charge $150 for the initial visit which includes consultation, examination and treatment and the $120 for the following visits.

The fees for my practice are moderate by New York City standards; most doctors offering similar therapies charge $ 200 to $300 for their visits and spend less time on each visit .

My fees can be paid in cash and check (no credit cards). Payment is expected at the time of service..

Services include:

  • Spinal Manipulation
  • Extremity Manipulation
  • Jaw (TMJ) Manipulation
  • NeuroKinetic Therapy
  • Cranial – Sacral Work
  • Chinese Five Element Energy /Acupressure Therapy
  • Organ Vascular & Lymphatic Therapy
  • Muscle Balancing
  • Emotional Balancing
  • Stress Reduction
  • Galvinic Therapy
  • Nutritional Consultation

Because of my Whole Person approach to wellness, I have helped patients with both short-term problems and long-term unresolved problems become free of their complaints.

And because I spend a good deal of time with you and because of my use of interrelated therapies, unlike a lot of doctors, I don’t require you to come in three times a week.

Some of the complaints that I have helped in the last 29 years are:

  • Musculoskeletal problems such as low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel, rotator cuff problems, knee pain, muscle pains
  • Headaches, Migraines
  • High blood pressure, fatique, low energy, problems losing weight, dizziness, vertigo, poor memory
  • Digestive problems such as constipation, diarrhea, belching, bloating, difficulty with certain foods, heartburn,
  • Respiratory problems such as hyper-sensitivity to pollen, ragweed, etc, difficulty breathing, frequent colds, sinus problems
  • Immune problems such as frequesnt colds, flu, infections
  • Menstrual cramps, hot flashes, irregular cycles, etc

So if you  want to utilize non-pharmacological means of getting relief, please give me a call at 212-431-3724. I’m located at 230 W 13th St #1B, NYC 10011 (between 7th & Greenwich Ave)

I’m  also the writer of this  blog, in which I talk about chiropractic, applied kinesiology techniques, muscle balancing, my thoughts on nutrition and healing and as befits a foodie and a daughter of an Italian chef, even some healthy and delicious recipes.

Applied Kinesiology As Part Of Treating for Functional Wellness

First what is functional wellness?

Functional wellness is an approach to the human body that allows you to treat the underlying cause of the problem such as for example heartburn—not just manage the symptoms of it.

Its primary distinction is a focus on overall health—physical, mental, and nutritional. It’s not a single treatment for a single problem (or its symptoms).

As a certified applied kinesiologist, I look for the cause of the problem. For example, in a case of heartburn, I look to see if the spinal segments innervating the stomach, the esophagus and diaphragm are moving freely.

Do the neuro-lymphatic or the neuro-vascular points need stimulation to increase lymphatic or vascular flow?

Is there a cranial fault involved?

Is the patient using their diaphragm correctly to breathe?  Is an imbalance in their psoas muscle affecting their diaphragm?

Is a visceral manipulation needed?

Does the patient need enzymes to help them digest or zinc to heal inflammation in the digestive tract?  Does the patient need probiotics?

Are there acupressure points involved? Is the energy in their stomach meridian being affected by an overflow of liver meridian energy due to the patient’s anger issues?

These and other questions arise when looking for the cause of a problem.

The human body functions as a network of interconnected systems that affect each other. so a functional wellness approach such as a chiropractic/applied kinesiology/nutrition treats the whole body rather than a sub-section or single organ system.

The goal of functional wellness also is the prevention and addressing the underlying clinical imbalances that may lead to any number of chronic problems.

functional_medicine

Keeping the spine and the cranium moving freely and the lymphatic, vascular and acu-points unblocked and making sure that the patient has the proper nutrition that they need is part of our prevention/maintenance care.

Part of my continuing education is keeping abreast of nutritional research and chiropractic techniques; please check out our Bibliography page on my web site http://www.drvittoriarepetto.com for a list of my continuing education studies.

If you have any questions or wish to talk to me about your concerns, please feel free to contact me either by e-mail drvittoriarepett@aol.com  or via phone 212-431-3724.

How a NYC Applied Kinesiologist Uses Neurovascular Pts for Better Physical and Emotional Wellbeing.

First what are neurovascular points?

Neurovascular points are points discovered in the 1930’s by chiropractor Dr. Terence Bennett. He had found via x-ray fluoroscope that stimulating these points would increase blood circulation to the organs that were associated with these points. The increased blood flow would increase the flow of nutrients and O2 to the associated organ and have the positive effect of improving the function of the associated organ.

Dr. George Goodheart who founded Applied Kinesiology took up Bennett’s work and noticed that the points could also turn weak muscles on. Dr. Goodheart then observed that many internal organs had reflex connections in the muscles and joints and along with a cross reference via the Chinese acupuncture system that certain muscles were associated w/ certain organs

Neurovascular points are mainly located on the face and head; they are stimulated by lightly pressing on the point until you feel a pulse and as most of these points have a right and left side on the head (or face).you would keep on pressing until the pulses matched each other.

One of the most well known points is used in Emotional Release Technique. These points are associated with the Pectoralis Major muscle and the Stomach. These associations are interesting as in our culture we talk about getting our stomach in a knot or about having chest tightness when we are upset. The points are the first two bumps on our forehead; neurovascular_points

The technique is simple: think about what is bothering you as you hold these points and then make a statement as how you will solve the problem. For example, if you have anxiety about talking to someone who always makes you angry; think about why they make you angry and then make a statement such as “I will not let “name” make me angry, his issues are his and not mine” or something simpler. Say the statement out loud as you hold the pulse and keep on repeating the phase until you feel the pulses becoming equal.

Try it and let me know!
