Water and Your Health

Recently one of my regular patients came in for an adjustment; she was on a new job that requires her to be on her feet for eight hours and a good deal of it outdoors.  And she was having some low back pain and numbness in her thigh.

 So after the orthopedic tests, I tested her Psoas muscle, it was weak on the side of her pain. The Psoas is attached to the front of the lumbar spine and a weakness or a spasm of the Psoas unilaterally can rotate the lumbar spine out of alignment and cause problems with the nerve roots as they exit the lumbar spine.

 And as it is almost summer and the weather has been warm I asked her about her intake of water, she had not been paying attention to her consumption of water. In the Chinese system of medicine, the Psoas muscle is associated w/ the Kidney Meridian and represents the element of water. So I asked her to go to my water cooler and have a few drinks of water; when she returned, I tested her again and this time, the Psoas tested strong.

 I’m telling this story to get to a few points.

 One is to remind people to drink lots of water especially during the warm weather: the composition of our bodies is 72% water and that includes our muscles. Dehydration can cause our muscles to lose strength.

Water is a transporter of nutrients and oxygen for proper function of the body’s tissues. Water helps remove waste from the body. Water acts as a natural air-conditioner through perspiration. Water is essential for digestion & absorption of vitamins and minerals.  Therefore dehydration can make us feel fatigued and sluggish; a common complaint compounded by salt loss….I’m talking not only sodium salts but also magnesium and potassium loss.  Try to consume the equivalent of 6-8 -8 oz glasses of water a day; soups and veggies and fruit do supply some water. Coffee, teas, beer, alcohol and (yes) herbal teas all have diuretic effect on our body so they don’t count as they make us lose more water than they add.

 And to drink water at regular intervals; if you wait until you feel thirsty, your body is already dehydrated. This rule of thumb becomes more important as we age because as we get older, that part of our brain does not signal as efficiently as it once did.

 Another point is that our spinal disc have less blood vessels perfusing them than the rest of our bodies which means that we get less water to our spinal discs So if you’re thirsty, your spinal discs are drying up and more subject to degeneration; a common cause of back and neck pain. http://www.spine-health.com/conditions/degenerative-disc-disease/degenerative-disc-disease-natural-degenerative-process

Symptoms of overhydration may not be recognized in the early st ages but can include:

  • nausea and vomiting
  • headache
  • changes in mental state (confusion or disorientation)

If left untreated, overhydration can lead to dangerously low levels of sodium in the blood (hyponatremia). This can cause more-severe symptoms, such as:

  • muscle weakness, spasms or cramps
  • seizures
  • unconsciousness
  • coma

To prevent overhydration, individuals should avoid drinking more than one liter per hour of fluid.(1 liter= 4.2 cups; 1 cup = 8 ozs)

The Beginning of My Journey as a Healer

It would seem that I have been heading this way for quite awhile. My journey to become a healer started with a journey of healing myself. I started this journey as a constipated child who had a cold at least once a month and whose ragweed allergy was getting worse every year.

At 18, I was in the Italian Alps; a cousin introduced to a whole grain product called muesli. It was my first un-constipated summer. Back in New York City I was having a hard time finding this product until I found this hole-in the-wall health food store. I had my first taste of carrot juice and left with the muesli, some brown rice and a resolution not to overcook my vegetables.

In the next seven years, my journey included changes in my diet, martial arts and studies of nutrition, herbs and homeopathics. During this time I was seriously thinking about what to do for the rest of my life. People around me were always asking me for back rubs; saying what good hands I had So in 1976, I started studying massage.

Also at this time, I had intensified my martial arts studies and was having muscle strains and spasms that no amount of stretching or massage seemed to help. A fellow student suggested that I go see “old Doc Christie” – a 75 yr old chiropractor whose mind was as clear as her body was strong. I would sit for hours watching her adjust her patients and listening to her talk about subluxations, nerve energy flow, spinal manipulations, extremity manipulations, enemas and liver detox. My ragweed allergy was improving.

My martial arts teacher told me about applied kinesiology; it was a technique that incorporated chiropractic with muscle balancing, organ neurovascular & neuro-lymphatic points, cranial-sacral work, nutritional consultation and acupressure therapy. In order to do this work, you couldn’t do assembly line chiropractic. You had to spend time: do a complete exam and really get to the different factors involved in the patient’s complaint.

In chiropractic college and in my practice, I have polished this idea like a diamond. I have incorporated studies on intestinal wall integrity, IgG food allergies and the interconnections between these and the immune system, the respiratory system, low back pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and degenerative disc problems.

And by the way my ragweed allergy is long gone.

A NYC Applied Kinesiologist on Your Ileo-Cecal Valve (& Houston’s) & Your Health

Problems w/ constipation? Diarrhea?  Having Strong urges to Defecate but Not Successful? Could it be your Ileo-Cecal Valve (or your Houston’s valve) is involved?

The Ileo-Cecal Valve is located between the ileum (last portion of your small intestine) and the cecum or ascending colon (first portion of your large intestine; the appendix lays just below it.. Its function is to allow digested food materials to pass from the small intestine into your large intestine. The ileo-cecal valve also blocks these waste materials from backing back up into your small intestine. It is intended to be a one-way valve, only opening up to allow the digested material to pass through and then closing to prevent the fecal contents from “falling” back into the small intestine. When the small intestine/large intestine is not active in the process of digestion or stool production), the valve is relaxed, neither open or closed.

 

Houston’s Valve – are transverse folds of rectum tissue that supports the weight of your feces and prevents pressure on the anal tissue to prevent a constant sense of urgency to defecate. A problem with the Houston’s valve can create a constant urge to defecate however the person may not be successful or have an incomplete defecation.

Ileocecal Valve Syndrome

When the ileocecal valve is stuck open waste products can back up into the small intestine (much like a backed up kitchen sink drain) disturbing your digestion and also creating unhealthy toxins that are absorbed into the body. Also, if the ileocecal valve is stuck closed waste products are prevented or constricted from passing into the large intestine.

Unfortunately, this disorder is often overlooked by the medical profession. A dysfunctional ileocecal valve can result in a combination of symptoms.

Treatment options for ileocecal valve (or Houston’s) syndrome are adjustment of the value itself, chiropractic adjustment of the spinal segmental that innervates the value, and the small intestine, large intestine and the rectal  neurovascular & neurolympathic pts for the valves and the small & large intestine,and rectum and a change in diet.

Please note that adjustment of the valve MUST BE DONE IN ORDER TO “FIX”THE PROBLEM; just doing the other techniques will not “fix” the problem.
