A NYC Chiropractor Talks About The Triad of Health In Applied Kinesiology

There are three factors involved when we talk about restoring or maintaining health, it is a triad symbolized by an equilateral triangle. If one side of the triangle is ignored, health is diminished and can lead to a significant health problem.

As a doctor of chiropractic using applied kinesiology to evaluate body function, I have a special interest in carefully observing all side of this triangle so that a patient can be evaluated and treated successfully.

The three parts of this equilateral triangle or triad are Structure, Chemical and Mental.

ak-image1.jpg

Structure: Chiropractic is the major healing profession dealing with the triad’s structural base. Chiropractors using applied kinesiology not only deal with the spine but also with the joints and muscles of the body.

Structural changes (especially of the spine) may compromise the spaces that nerves must transverse, causing nerve entrapment. Nerves are a major form of communication in the body; muscles, organs and glands may not function correctly if there is nerve entrapment. Lymphatic flow and vascular flow can also be entrapped. Body pain and numbness, lack of energy, general malaise, decreased immune and organ function are possible signs of a problem with nerve, lymphatic or vascular flow that started with a structural problem. Muscle weakness and imbalance can increase the structural instability which is compromising nerve, lymphatic and vascular flow, thus forming a vicious circle.

Chemical: The allopathic medical profession attempts to control body dysfunction via prescription drugs; unfortunately most drugs only mask symptoms and do not cure and in addition can cause dangerous side effects.

In holistic professions such as chiropractic, nutritional deficiencies are included in the chemical side of the triangle.

Malnutrition is an increasing problem due to refining of foods, addition of toxic chemicals, increase in pesticide use, dietary indiscretion and the depletion of the soil in which food are grown. Malnutrition is insidious in nature, often not resulting in a classic malnutrition disease but causing a general health loss.

Along with physical examination and tests, nutritional supplements can be tested by having the patient chew the supplement and see if it is needed.

Certain foods such as wheat or diary can also be tested to see if the food is harmful as in food allergies or sensitivity.

Mental/Spiritual: We all know that a person’s mental attitude affects their health. A headache can precede a stressful situation such a job interview or a family gathering. A patient who suffers from chronic fatigue can start to believe that they will never get well and constantly sends negative impulses via their thoughts to their brain and nervous system causing a vicious cycle.

Mood swings or depression can be the result of low blood sugar, low omega 3 fats, or too much of the wrong nutrition, for example.

Postural changes such chronic tight trapezius muscles caused by stress can affect how well a person feels.

The sides of the triad or equilateral triangle interact with each other. For example, when there is constant structural strain it can affect a person’s emotions. Emotions affect the normal digestion of the food a person eats or the person eats too much sweets due to their emotions. Due to this the chemical side of the triangle becomes involved and a nutritional deficiency develops which may develop into muscle weakness or spasm that increases the structural strain tus completing a vicious cycle.

As a doctor of chiropractor and an applied kinesiologist, one can evaluate and treat all sides of the triangle. One can correct structure and nerve function to effect better support and control of a patient’s health. The triad of health can be tested via the patient’s own body to determine the effect. Emotional and anxiety reactions can be improved by positive feedback and emotional release techniques and with working with the other two sides of the triangles.

The interplay between parts of the triangle affects many aspects of health and affects the ability of an holistic doctor to treat the WHOLE PERSON.

Why Maintenance Chiropractic & AK Care?

Many people have found that after regaining their health through chiropractic care, they can maintain health by regular check-ups. And it is easier to maintain health than to regain it once lost. Chiropractic care with applied kinesiology offers the best opportunity to maintain health because it works with the triad of health:  Structure, Chemical & Mental (Emotional).

The triad of health represents three areas where health dysfunction may develop to cause health problems. Because nearly all major health problems develop for many years before symptoms appear and the problem is discovered, it is important to have a system to find dysfunction before symptoms develop. Applied kinesiology is such a system. First, lets look at the three areas of the triad of health: Structure, Chemical & Mental (Emotional)

Structure: Structural imbalance may occur at any time in our modern environment. For example: Rather than getting good exercise by walking to work most of us ride the subway to work. Once there, we do a lot of sitting. This can cause a weakening and very oft en an imbalance of muscle structure, in turn affects the bodys structural balance. Even those who do a lot of physical work, keeping their muscles in excellent tone, are subjected to great structural stresses throughout the day, e.g., the forklift operator who gets jarred all day. Sometimes an injury occurs from lifting or from something as simple as bumping ones head. The pain goes away shortly but there may be residual problems causing functional imbalance. Often a simple problem causes a weakness that sets up a distortion that allows another stress to cause an additional functional problem such as a spasm in the low back causing a weakness in the Psoas muscle which in turn may cause a problem w/ our walking or breathing via its association w/ the diaphragm muscle. Structural imbalance creates health problems in many ways, especially through interference with normal nerve function via pressure on the nerve root at the spinal level or at the muscle spindles or golgi tendons.

Chemical: We live in a modern chemical environment. Pollution, preservatives in foods, artificial food products, and drugs put a tremendous strain on the organs and glands of our bodies. Even if we eat organic foods, the fact that they may be picked prior to the ripening process in order to facilitate shipping across the country or that our soil is missing important nutrients compared to 50 yrs ago. Some diets such as the typical meat & potato American diet or Atkins may contain too much saturated fat or too much iron or not enough fiber; vegan or vegetarian diets may not contain enough vitamin B12; too much soy may be contributing to a sluggish thyroid or too much roughage may be decreasing your absorption of nutrients. Or we have food allergies that affects the absorption of nutrients and allows the passage of toxic materials via an injured gut lining. All these factors may be contributing from some type of nutritional problem.

Mental (Emotional): In our distant past, most stressors were related to battling w/ the environment or producing food and fighting dangerous animals or an enemy; and these stressors were dealt w/ physical activity helping keep the body in harmony. Today we are faced with mental problems as the kids not getting along with the neighbors, problems at work, financial worries, or conflicts with an individual. These are problems that cannot be fought physically, the effect often a hormonal imbalance, and it in turn creates a neurologic imbalance. Fortunately applied kinesiology, in combination with other diagnostic procedures, can find health problems just beginning to develop before they cause an actual disease. The glandular system, out of balance as a result of mental stress, can be returned to normal by nutritional supplementation and neurologic treatment via neuro-lympathic, neuro-vascular and acupressure points. Structural stresses that accumulate from our imbalanced type of living can be restored to normal via spinal, extremity or cranial adjustments and muscle balancing. Chemical imbalances in the form of dietary deficiencies (or overload) can be found and corrected either by supplements or a change in our diet or homeopathics. Detrimental chemical factors can be identified and, as much as possible, eliminated from our environment. Maintenance health care varies for different individuals. Factors that must be considered in determining the frequency of your health care visits are: 1. The current level of your health; 2. Age; 3. Congenital weaknesses such as a congenital short leg; 4. Stress that cannot be eliminated, such as living in the city. 5. Nutritional status 6. Habits Remember what you do today will affect your health five, ten, and even twenty years from now.

What is the Triad of Health in Applied Kinesiology

Triad of Health

The Triad of Health with structure at the base is the foundation of AK. A human form represents structure and postural balance. A circle of icons represents important treatment avenues used in AK.

N The functional evaluation of the nervous system is what the MMT (manual muscle testing)  offers, and is the most important area of investigation in AK and chiropractic examination.

NL The NeuroLymphatic reflexes and the lymph system is an important part of AK examination and treatment.

NV The NeuroVascular reflexes and the blood vascular system is also evaluated and treated in AK.

CSF The cranial-sacral system is an important component in nervous system function, and AK has advanced the diagnosis of cranial dysfunctions dramatically.

AMC The acupuncture meridian system is also involved in AK examination, and AK has made some of the first advancements to this ancient system of healing in the Western world.

A great deal of new information has been learned about the body’s function by evaluating how nerves and muscles react to physical, chemical, and mental stimuli. AK examination will use your own body as the laboratory of investigation, taking into consideration a wide range of influences and functional disturbances that are producing the health problems that you are want corrected. As your treatment progresses, you will observe muscles that once functioned poorly are now strong and that your body is functioning as well or better than normal.
