A NYC Chiropractor Talks About The Triad of Health In Applied Kinesiology

There are three factors involved when we talk about restoring or maintaining health, it is a triad symbolized by an equilateral triangle. If one side of the triangle is ignored, health is diminished and can lead to a significant health problem.

As a doctor of chiropractic using applied kinesiology to evaluate body function, I have a special interest in carefully observing all side of this triangle so that a patient can be evaluated and treated successfully.

The three parts of this equilateral triangle or triad are Structure, Chemical and Mental.

ak-image1.jpg

Structure: Chiropractic is the major healing profession dealing with the triad’s structural base. Chiropractors using applied kinesiology not only deal with the spine but also with the joints and muscles of the body.

Structural changes (especially of the spine) may compromise the spaces that nerves must transverse, causing nerve entrapment. Nerves are a major form of communication in the body; muscles, organs and glands may not function correctly if there is nerve entrapment. Lymphatic flow and vascular flow can also be entrapped. Body pain and numbness, lack of energy, general malaise, decreased immune and organ function are possible signs of a problem with nerve, lymphatic or vascular flow that started with a structural problem. Muscle weakness and imbalance can increase the structural instability which is compromising nerve, lymphatic and vascular flow, thus forming a vicious circle.

Chemical: The allopathic medical profession attempts to control body dysfunction via prescription drugs; unfortunately most drugs only mask symptoms and do not cure and in addition can cause dangerous side effects.

In holistic professions such as chiropractic, nutritional deficiencies are included in the chemical side of the triangle.

Malnutrition is an increasing problem due to refining of foods, addition of toxic chemicals, increase in pesticide use, dietary indiscretion and the depletion of the soil in which food are grown. Malnutrition is insidious in nature, often not resulting in a classic malnutrition disease but causing a general health loss.

Along with physical examination and tests, nutritional supplements can be tested by having the patient chew the supplement and see if it is needed.

Certain foods such as wheat or diary can also be tested to see if the food is harmful as in food allergies or sensitivity.

Mental/Spiritual: We all know that a person’s mental attitude affects their health. A headache can precede a stressful situation such a job interview or a family gathering. A patient who suffers from chronic fatigue can start to believe that they will never get well and constantly sends negative impulses via their thoughts to their brain and nervous system causing a vicious cycle.

Mood swings or depression can be the result of low blood sugar, low omega 3 fats, or too much of the wrong nutrition, for example.

Postural changes such chronic tight trapezius muscles caused by stress can affect how well a person feels.

The sides of the triad or equilateral triangle interact with each other. For example, when there is constant structural strain it can affect a person’s emotions. Emotions affect the normal digestion of the food a person eats or the person eats too much sweets due to their emotions. Due to this the chemical side of the triangle becomes involved and a nutritional deficiency develops which may develop into muscle weakness or spasm that increases the structural strain tus completing a vicious cycle.

As a doctor of chiropractor and an applied kinesiologist, one can evaluate and treat all sides of the triangle. One can correct structure and nerve function to effect better support and control of a patient’s health. The triad of health can be tested via the patient’s own body to determine the effect. Emotional and anxiety reactions can be improved by positive feedback and emotional release techniques and with working with the other two sides of the triangles.

The interplay between parts of the triangle affects many aspects of health and affects the ability of an holistic doctor to treat the WHOLE PERSON.

Testimonial From A Friend w/ Gall Bladder Problems That I Helped

Vittoria – so I think you remember, and I want to THANK YOU for all your advice regarding gall bladder cleaning – I want to post about this too on Facebook and thank you, if that is OK – I had the six month followup on my gall bladder – and while I am not 100% clean, my doctor said he had never seen such rapid improvement – which he said had to be the diet on top of the Ursodial medicine – the scans are just incredible – from a gall bladder full of sludge and stones, to one with such a scattering of tiny sparkles, remnants of what was there and no edema or wall swelling and no issues with the bile ducts – I am still going to continue with ursodial another 6 months at least, and of course, olive oil, artichoke, healthy fats, mostly vegetarian and fish – but really the changes are incredible and what should take two years, took about 6 months – really thank you – Mike

The Use of Applied Kinesiology in a Chiropractic Examination

In the chiropractic examination which includes orthopedic, neurological and spinal palpation, the addition of applied kinesiology and muscle testing adds an extra dimension of revealing the patient’s health status.

In the 1960’s, Dr George Goodheart found that muscle testing could be used in the evaluation of normal and abnormal body function. His examination soon included evaluation of the vascular and lymphatic system, nutrition, acupoint therapy, cranial movement and other factors that control health. He called this system based on the application of muscle testing: applied kinesiology.

Muscle testing is the first part of the applied kinesiological examination; muscles are tested in a specific manner in different areas of the body. When a weakness is found, the question that the chiropractic/AK doctor has to answer is why the weakness is there.

Is the weakness due to a spinal/nerve problem, a vascular problem, a problem with lymphatic function, a nutritional default, a problem with organ function or an acupoint associated w/ that muscle?

AK-img3

What treatment is needed to correct the problem and improve the patient’s health?

In the process of answering the question, the patient will either place their finger or hand on specific points or areas and the doctor retests the muscle to see if the weakness is corrected. This is called therapy localization.

If the therapy localization is positive and the area involved is the spine or a joint or a cranial fault,, the doctor will move the area in a way to stimulate neuro/mechano receptors in the joint or spine. This is called a “challenge’ and shows the direction of manipulation needed to improve function of the joint/spine and/or cranial movement.

Therapy localization is also used to evaluate if there is a problem w/ the vascular and lymphatic that supply the organs of the body or the meridian/acupoint system that are related to certain organ and muscle function.

In addition to the information from blood tests and examination of hair, eyes, skin, etc, an applied kinesiologist can use muscle testinng to “challenge” the supplements needed or the possibility of food allergies or intolerances that are affecting the patient’s health.

Therefore the addition of applied kinesiology combined with usual examination helps find what the problem is and how to correct it. The correction immediately improves muscle function and decreases the pain or the problem that the patient first came in with to the doctor.

On future visits, the above examination reveals if the corrections held and if the patient’s health is improving.

When health is restored , an applied kinesiologist uses these methods to maintain health and correct problems before they develop.

New Patient Testimonial for a NYC Chiropractor/Applied Kinesiologist

The following was posted the early March by a patient of mine, Cheryl S. at a private website and she gave me permission to repost it.

I can vouch for Dr. Repetto! She’s been my chiropractor for about six years, and she just worked magic on an old injury.

I had to have surgery to reconstruct my shattered pelvis after a very serious accident in 2011. My surgeon warned me at the time that I would lose feeling on the front of my thigh because they would have to sever a nerve serving that skin. While I’m profoundly grateful to have regained 100% of my strength and range of motion, I’ve been mourning the loss of sensation in that large area ever since.. Damn!

I just had to have yet another surgery related to that same accident and I’ve had some concerns about post surgery nerve function in a muscle group adjacent to the numb skin on my thigh. I asked Dr. Repetto to check it out, and she also did some work on the numb area. I’m thrilled and astounded to be able to say that after she treated me the other night I seem to have suddenly regained sensation in a large portion of the numb skin area! Honestly, that should have been impossible. I don’t have full sensation yet. It’s kind of tingly, but I have another appointment with Dr. Repetto next week. Crossing fingers. It would be magical to regain that area.

Cheryl S.

A NYC Chiropractor & Applied Kinesiologist Talks About Getting 1/2 of your Calcium From Food

If you have been following my blogs, you know that as a Doctor of Chiropractic and an Applied Kinesiologist I am interested in nutrition. In this blog, I am recommending that at least half of your calcium intake (daily intake – 900mg- 1200 mg) come from the food that you eat. Please see below for a listing of calcium in common foods.

There are reasons for this: one is that fresh unprocessed foods contain other minerals besides calcium like magnesium, potassium and boron that help form the collagen matrix lattice in your bones that the calcium attachs itself to.

These fresh foods like green leafy vegetables and yogurt contain Vitamin K; one of the functions of this vitamin is to keep calcium out of your joints and arteries. Other food like dairy products, eggs, fish contain Vitamin D which helps the calcium attach to the bone.

In another blog, I talked about being careful about what kind of calcium is in your supplements as some calcium supplements can prevent absorption  of calcium, weaken your bones and create other health problems.

A NYC Chiropractor/ Applied Kinesiologist Talks About How Your Multi and/or Calcium Supplement May Be Causing Problems

One of the protocols I perform when I have a new patient is I look at the labels of the multiple vitamin and calcium supplements they are taking as their daily routine.

In this blog, I’ll be talking about two minerals that may be critical to your health.

One of the most common problems is the use of Calcium Carbonate in the supplement they are taking. Calcium Carbonate is an antacid which a lot of vitamin companies use because it is cheap.

The problem is that you need acid in your stomach in order to digest your food and absorb vitamins and mineral from both your diet and your supplements. Taking Calcium Carbonate stops that digestive process.

Decreasing (or completely getting rid of) the acid in your stomach means that you can’t digest and absorb not only Calcium but protein, iron, magnesium, Vitamin B12 and zinc.

So basically you are setting yourself up for osteoporosis, fatigue, muscle wasting, iron anemia, memory problems and poor wound healing to mention a few.

And because of the lack of acid, you may feel like you have heartburn and think that you have too acid and take more antacids; further compounding the problem.

The other major mineral in patient’s supplements that I’ll be talking about is iron.

Unless you are a menstruating women w a heavy flow or an extreme athlete or on an extreme starvation diet, iron supplementation may not be necessary.

Iron is present in animal protein and beans, legumes and some leafy green vegetables. And a lot of packaged foods like cereal and dairy and nut milk products have added iron.

Too much iron can accumulate in organs like the brain, the pancreas, gonads, pituitary, liver, the joints and heart and cause problems like toxic liver, arthritis, dementia, etc

Lab tests for excess iron include serum ferritin level and transferrin saturation; regular anemia testing will not show the problem.

A great way to keep your iron levels from getting too high from added iron in your food is to donate blood (and great karma).

There are vitamin companies that make multi-vitamin minerals that do not have added iron; one company that I recommend and use is Metagenics. (http://www.metagenics.com )

I also recommend taking a supplement w either MCHC and Calcium Citrate for your calcium. Please check out another blog Getting Enough Calcium Into Your Bones? Ten Facts You Need to Know!

No Insurance, No Problem. Reasonable Rates with Dr. Repetto – NYC Chiropractor / Applied Kinesiologist

Hi!, I’m Dr. Vittoria Repetto, a native downtown New Yorker and Doctor of Chiropractor and an Applied Kinesiologist who has been in practice since 1987. And recently a Neuro Kinetic Therapy practitioner.

I treat the whole person, not just your symptoms. I know that balancing your structure, your biochemistry and your mental outlook all contribute to your well-being.

Each of my 75 minute long wellness sessions is unique and composed of interrelated holistic therapies that work together to achieve maximum benefits.

I am not affiliated with any insurance network.

If I belonged to a network I would have to see patients in an assembly line fashion (10-15 minutes). I would not be able to take time to, for example, balance the muscle pull on your spine or extremities or to do cranial sacral work or acupressure work or talk to you about your nutritional needs or suggest exercises or lifestyle changes related to your condition.

Therefore I ask that my patients pay me directly and I fill out their insurance claim form and they get reimbursed by their insurance company if they are allowed to go “out of network” by their policy.

I charge $150 for the initial visit which includes consultation, examination and treatment and the $120 for the following visits.

The fees for my practice are moderate by New York City standards; most doctors offering similar therapies charge $ 200 to $300 for their visits and spend less time on each visit .

My fees can be paid in cash and check (no credit cards). Payment is expected at the time of service..

Services include:

  • Spinal Manipulation
  • Extremity Manipulation
  • Jaw (TMJ) Manipulation
  • NeuroKinetic Therapy
  • Cranial – Sacral Work
  • Chinese Five Element Energy /Acupressure Therapy
  • Organ Vascular & Lymphatic Therapy
  • Muscle Balancing
  • Emotional Balancing
  • Stress Reduction
  • Galvinic Therapy
  • Nutritional Consultation

Because of my Whole Person approach to wellness, I have helped patients with both short-term problems and long-term unresolved problems become free of their complaints.

And because I spend a good deal of time with you and because of my use of interrelated therapies, unlike a lot of doctors, I don’t require you to come in three times a week.

Some of the complaints that I have helped in the last 29 years are:

  • Musculoskeletal problems such as low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel, rotator cuff problems, knee pain, muscle pains
  • Headaches, Migraines
  • High blood pressure, fatique, low energy, problems losing weight, dizziness, vertigo, poor memory
  • Digestive problems such as constipation, diarrhea, belching, bloating, difficulty with certain foods, heartburn,
  • Respiratory problems such as hyper-sensitivity to pollen, ragweed, etc, difficulty breathing, frequent colds, sinus problems
  • Immune problems such as frequesnt colds, flu, infections
  • Menstrual cramps, hot flashes, irregular cycles, etc

So if you  want to utilize non-pharmacological means of getting relief, please give me a call at 212-431-3724. I’m located at 230 W 13th St #1B, NYC 10011 (between 7th & Greenwich Ave)

I’m  also the writer of this  blog, in which I talk about chiropractic, applied kinesiology techniques, muscle balancing, my thoughts on nutrition and healing and as befits a foodie and a daughter of an Italian chef, even some healthy and delicious recipes.
