A NYC Chiropractor/Applied Kinesiologist Posts a Case History Using both AK & Neuro-Kinetics

What applied kinesiology and neuro kinetics have in common is muscle testing and therapy localization. 

In the latter therapy localization (TL), the patient will either place their hand or finger on specific points, a vertebrae or another muscle and the doctor retests the previous weak or inhibited muscle to see if the weakness is corrected. https://drvittoriarepetto.wordpress.com/2014/08/09/the-use-of-applied-kinesiology-in-a-chiropractic-examination/.

In neuro kinetics, the patient either touches a muscle or actively contracts the strong muscle that may be compensating for a inhibited muscle or set of muscles.

Female 50’s 1 wk ago sat in a small chair that only supported her “rt. cheek” resulting in lt. low back pain. Tested bilateral psoas/ tensor fasciae latae (TFL) /transverse abdominal (TVA)/ rectus abdominal (RA) /quadratus lumborum (QL)/hamstring/gluteus max….weak (W) or inhibited bilateral QL/ lt. glut max….patient therapy localizies rt. hamstring…..bilateral QL/lt. gluteus maximus now test strong …rt hamstring was facilitating muscle …… treat rt hamstring w/ spindle/golgi tendon work( an AK technique)…retest lt glut max/bilateral QL for “neural lock” which sends a message to the brain to start activating the previous inhibited muscle.

I then use chiropractic/applied kinesiology technique to correct the following: patient had a category 1 pelvis- patient’s torso is torquing opposite the upper body, (http://www.chiroaccess.com/Articles/Chiropractic-Technique-Summary–Sacro-Occipital-Technique-SOT.aspx?id=00002910) and  irritation of lt illiolumber ligament which connects 5th lumbar and pelvis , and irritation of lt sacro-tuberous ligament which connects bottom of sacrum to lower pelvis, adjust the torque of the 4th lumbar. Two cranial sutures were adjusted that go along with a category 1 pelvis.

Exercises for QL &  gluteus max are given.

A NYC Chiropractor & Applied Kinesiologist Talks About Getting 1/2 of your Calcium From Food

If you have been following my blogs, you know that as a Doctor of Chiropractic and an Applied Kinesiologist I am interested in nutrition. In this blog, I am recommending that at least half of your calcium intake (daily intake – 900mg- 1200 mg) come from the food that you eat. Please see below for a listing of calcium in common foods.

There are reasons for this: one is that fresh unprocessed foods contain other minerals besides calcium like magnesium, potassium and boron that help form the collagen matrix lattice in your bones that the calcium attachs itself to.

These fresh foods like green leafy vegetables and yogurt contain Vitamin K; one of the functions of this vitamin is to keep calcium out of your joints and arteries. Other food like dairy products, eggs, fish contain Vitamin D which helps the calcium attach to the bone.

How a NYC Applied Kinesiologist/NeuroKinetic Therapist Treats Heartburn or Acid Reflux

Heartburn, also known as acid reflux, is a burning sensation in the chest, just behind the breastbone or just below the breastbone. The sensation of pain or discomfort often rises in the chest and may radiate to the neck, throat, or angle of the jaw. The sensation gets worse on lying down or bending over.

Chronic heartburn is called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a relatively new classification of chronic heartburn (less than 10 yrs) which seems to have appeared at the same time as two new classifications of drugs H-2-receptor blockers and Proton pump inhibitors which were stronger and provided longer relief than similar antacids.

However  all three mentioned drug classifications by different mechanisms stop the production of stomach acid; stomach acid which we need in order to not only digest food but help us absorb essential nutrients like Calcium and Vitamin B12.

Now one of the possible causes of heartburn or acid reflux is a hiatal hernia. When one part of the internal body pushes into another part where it should not be, it is called a hernia.  The hiatus is an a opening in the diaphragm muscle that allows for the passage of the esophagus as it attaches to the stomach and the passage of the aorta, the inferior vena cava and nerves.

A hiatal hernia is when due to diaphragm weakness, the stomach slips upward through the hiatus into the space where the esophagus is causing both nerve irritation and slippage of stomach acid into the esophagus causing the sensation of heartburn or GERD.

 As a chiropractor, we affect the diaphragm by manipulation of the 4th & 5th cervical vertebrae which  then forms the phrenic nerve and innervates the diaphragm and the stomach and esophagus via manipulation of the greater splanchnic nerve  at 5th to 9th thoracic vertebrae

As an applied kinesiologist,  we work the neuro-lymphatics and neuro-vascular points to increase blood and lymph flow for these organs. I would also look for a possible fixation (not a subluxation) of the lower thoracic vertebrate.

Besides the diaphragm, the psoas muscle is important to check as its fibers blend with the fibers of the posterior diaphragm. The muscles of the chest and the abdomen are also important to check if the patient is constantly in a flexed position.

As an applied kinesiologist, I check to see which muscles are weak or hypertonic.

As a neurokinetic therapist, I look to see if the muscles of the posterior thoracic (mid back)  are inhibited by the muscles of the anterior chest or abdomen .

The cranial system is checked for involvement of the parasympathetic (vagus nerve). 

Acupoints  for the stomach, and lung may be checked for involvement.

We would gently after these procedures try to gently manipulate the movement of the stomach back into its proper place and then strengthen the diaphragm muscles; give breathing exercises for the patient to do at home to stop the hernia from happening again are  included as well as nutrients like zinc, l-glutamine to heal any micro-erosions in the GI wall, digestive enzymes to restore the function of the stomach and   supplements like Vitamin B12 and calcium that have not been absorbed due to medications.

Possible Methods to Prevent Cognition Decline

There are studies going on that suggest that different foods, certain nutrients and exercise may have an effect on not only preventing amyloid deposits but may have an effect in clearing them. Some of the studies that are going on are based on observation of lower rates of Alzheimer’s in populations that use certain foods.

For example, observation of Indian & Southeast Asian populations that tend to eat a lot of curry have stimulated studies on Turmeric as a possible clearing mechanisms http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20622013
Rosemary has a very old reputation for improving memory, and has been used as a symbol for remembrance (during weddings, war commemorations and funerals) in Europe and Australia In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Ophelia says, “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance.”

Osteoporosis -New Concern for HIV Patients

An important article that shows that M.D.’s need to start learning about nutrition.
The doctor’s recommendations in this article tells patients to take calcuim carbonate, eat dairy & sardines for Ca sources and to  take bisphosphonates for osteoporosis.
Unfortunately the recommendation of calcium carbonate is a joke since you need acid in your stomach and calcium carbonate acts as an antacid (what Tums is made from) so you do not absorb any Ca from this source
 
The article also does not mention that you also need Mg for yr. bones as well as other trace minerals.
 
Also fails to mention that some of the best sources of calcium is green leafy veggies, almonds, seaweed and beans; esp important if you are lactose intolerant and can’t use dairy products
 
And as for taking bisphosphonates, even the FDA is updating the public regarding information previously communicated describing the risk of atypical fractures of the thigh, known as subtrochanteric and diaphyseal femur fractures, in patients who take bisphosphonates for osteoporosis. http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm229009.htm
