Fibromyalgia: Thoughts About It by a NYC Chiropractor / Applied Kinesiologist/ Neurokinetic Therapist/

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and sensitivity to touch along with fatigue, problems with sleep and memory and brain fog, People diagnosed with fibromyalgia also often suffer from anxiety, chronic fatigue, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, migraine and tension headaches, painful bladder disorder and TMJ (jaw pain).

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Fibromyalgia can’t be easily confirmed or ruled out through a simple laboratory test. You can’t detect it in your blood or see it on an X-ray. .Because there is no test for fibromyalgia, we must rely solely on your group of symptoms to make a diagnosis.”

However other blood tests can be taken to rule out conditions like auto -immune, thyroid dysfunction, anemia, viral or bacterial infection, nutritional deficiencies  etc.

One of the first things I look at is the patient’s diet/lifestyle: are they eating processed foods, soda, etc.;drinking enough water;  have a history of medications or antibiotics; are they taking the wrong supplements (too little- too much); do they have  food allergies or intolerance?

It’s not a Food Allergy; maybe it’s a Food Intolerance

I would suspect a leaky gut syndrome and the need to change the person’s diet, test them for allergies/intolerance (igE/IgG)  and ileo-cecal problems and the need for prebiotics and probiotics and other supplements to help repair their gut.

The Correct Use of Muscle Testing in Nutritional Evaluation in Applied Kinesiology

As a Applied Kinesiologist, I test for the function of individual muscles. Are they weak or strong.? The questions to be asked are: why is the muscle weak? Is the muscle on the other side hypertonic or “too stronger.”

As a NKT practitioner, I ask “Is there a dysfunction in the coordination of muscles working in patterns?” I would identify muscle imbalances by using muscle testing to determine what muscles are inhibited and what muscles are compensating (facilitating)for them.

Are these factors causing the muscles to be sensitive to touch?

Is there a problem with the vascular or lymphatic drainage of that muscle?

I might use neuro-lymphatic , neuro-vascular points and acu-points to increase lymphatic, blood and chi energy to organs and muscles.

How a NYC Applied Kinesiologist Uses Neurovascular Pts for Better Physical and Emotional Wellbeing.

Using AK techniques, the flow of energy in the meridians to the organs and muscles can be evaluated and corrected if out of balance. Correction can be made by many methods of stimulation, such as electrical,  small tape patches with metal balls, or simply by mechanically stimulating certain spots.  There is usually an immediate improvement in muscle/organ function after meridian balancing.

Is there a problem with the cranial-sacral system? The purpose of the movement of the cranial-sacral system  is to aid the circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid throughout the central nervous system.

Some have suggested that CSF flow along the cranial nerves and spinal nerve roots allow it into the lymphatic channels. Restoring normal cranial-sacral rhythm enables the body to function optimally and may alleviate a wide variety of painful and dysfunctional conditions within the body.

Cranial Sacral Therapy in Applied Kinesiology

Is the patients under chronic stress? Can I help this patient w/ stimulation of their adrenals or with certain supplements?

Is the patient using their diaphragm correctly to order to  get enough oxygen to their body? Stimulation of the diaphragm via spinal adustment and neuro-vasular/neuro-lymphatic/acu-points are done. Patient is taught how to use their diaphragm to get more oxygen into their system.

Can the patient tolerate gentle exercise like chi gong which is is a form of gentle exercise composed of movements that are repeated a number of times, often stretching the body, increasing fluid movement (blood, synovial and lymph) and building awareness of how the body moves through space.?

As a chiropractor, I can use non-force adjustments. It provides a gentle force into the spine of the patient through a very carefully directed and controlled pressure. This method is performed to be able to restore a stronger position and motion to fixated spinal joints taking pressure off the nerves exiting the spinal vertebrae which control the muscles and organs of the body.

These are some of the questions that need to addressed w/ the the complex problem of fibromyalgia; each patient is different and their needs must be addressed.

How a NYC Chiropractor/Applied Kinesiologist/NeuroKineticTherapy Practitioner Treats Migraine Headaches

Are you having intense throbbing or a pulsing sensation in one area of your head and experiencing nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.

Does your headache last for hours to days and is it so severe that all you can think about is finding a dark, quiet place to lie down.

Then it a good bet that you are suffering from a migraine headache.

Some find that their migraine is preceded or accompanied by sensory warning symptoms (aura), such as flashes of light, blind spots, or tingling in your arm or leg.

Unfortunately a lot of migraine sufferers take pharmaceuticals which only work 50% of the time, only that mask symptoms and cause side effects which include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, liver toxicity, muscle weakness and an increased risk of strokes and heart attacks.

migraine

In my practice, I have work with numerous people affected by migraines and I use a combination of holistic therapies to give my patients relief from their migraines.

In my practice, I have found some of the causes to be

  • Cervical and Cranial Misalignment/Malfunction
  • Neck Muscle Imbalances – Facilitating ones compensating for inhibited/weak ones
  • TMJ – Jaw joint & muscle imbalances
  • Stress
  • Liver toxicity
  • Food allergies/ Intolerances
  • Imbalance in Organ and Vascular Function
  • Nutritional Deficiencies such as Magnesium, B complex vitamins, Vitamin D and CoQ10

A lot of migraine sufferers have a combination of these causal factors.

In my practice, I check for upper cervical mis-alignments which can irritate nerves to the head and refer painful impulses.

Jammed cranial sutures can also affect both cranial and cervical nerves and the muscles of the head and cause pain.

Poor posture can cause cervical and cranial problems and therefore a patient’s posture is addressed and corrected.

Neck, shoulder and jaw muscles are tested for imbalances where facilitated muscles are compensating for inhibited muscles or where hypo-tonic  or hyper-tonic muscles affect the alignment of the spine, jaw or skull.

Organ and vascular mis-function (not pathology), food allergies, intolerances, and liver toxicity can affect the processes of organs to work efficiently, decrease blood flow, affect the immune response and increase toxics in the body.

I use neuro-lymphatics and neuro-vascular pts and acupressure pts to increase the function and energy of the body.

I can also use these points to help the patient deal with stress and also suggest lifestyle changes to help them cope with the cause of their stress

https://drvittoriarepetto.wordpress.com/2011/07/29/how-a-nyc-applied-kinesiologist-uses-neurovascular-pts-for-better-physical-and-emotional-wellbeing/

I check to see if the patient is eating foods that aggravate their migraine symptoms; these can include food allergies and intolerances such as gluten or dairy. Allergies and intolerances create problems in your gut and increase toxicity in the body.

https://drvittoriarepetto.wordpress.com/2010/05/15/it%e2%80%99s-not-a-food-allergy-maybe-it%e2%80%99s-a-food-intolerance/

I encourage patient to only eat whole, natural un-processed fresh foods and get rid of artificial sweeteners, foods with high fructose corn syrup and other additives.

A lot of migraine sufferers befit from nutritional supplementation and a liver detox to increase body function

It’s not a Food Allergy; maybe it’s a Food Intolerance

So you have severe bloating, and belching, problems w/ elimination and general abdominal discomfort and growing fatigue and other vague medical symptoms. Or you may have been diagnosed w/ either Crohn’s disease or Irritable Bowel Syndrome and the standard procedures are not working for you. You suspect your regular MD thinks you are a hypochondriac but he has agreed to test you for IGE allergies.

But they come back all negative. So now what??

You may need to be tested for IgG food intolerances; a problem that functional medicine and nutritionally minded doctors have been helping with for years but  conventional medical doctors are just beginning to look at this phenomenon.

Unlike IgE food allergies that will cause an immediate and maybe deadly reaction such as difficulty breathing or a skin rash or a swollen tongue (think E for emergency); a IgG food intolerance is a delayed reaction, maybe causing problems 3-21 days after the ingestion of the food that is problematic for you and your digestive system (think G for general or non-specific problems).

So one of the problems in testing is the wide number of food suspects due to the long period of time that is required for your body to react to a IgG food intolerance. This can be expensive.

And the FDA is still saying that the IgG food testing is experimental and therefore insurance companies can deny coverage.

So one of the procedures I do in my Applied Kinesiology practice, is to do a “presumptive” muscle test challenge using muscles associated to digestion via the Chinese meridian/acupoint system such as the Pectoralis Clav Major. If the muscle is strong, the patient then contacts the neuro-lymphatic point for that muscle as I place a food into their mouth and have them chew the food in order to stimulate taste receptors on the tongue and activate gustatory receptors in the brain.

If a particular food causes the muscle to then test “weak” after stimulating these receptors, then the patient is asked to stop eating that particular food for one month’s time.

If the patient has good insurance, then we may order IgG food Intolerance test as we has narrowed the field of possible suspects.  Sometimes this is not financially possible for the patient.

However when IgG testing is possible, the results show a 80-100% correlation w/ the results of the muscle test in my practice. Elimination of the positive tested foods results in the patient’s complaints of general abdominal discomfort and growing fatigue and other vague medical symptom to start disappearing.

While the patient is avoiding the suspected foods, I will advise the patient on healing their leaky gut syndrome (also called increased intestinal permeability)

A leaky gut is the result of damage to the intestinal lining from years of abuse via the food intolerance. Leaky gut is also caused by other factors such antibiotic overuse, prescription and over-the counter drugs and excessive alcohol consumption.

A leaky gut is less able to protect the internal environment as well as to filter needed nutrients and other biological substances. As a consequence, some bacteria and their toxins, incompletely digested proteins and fats, and waste not normally absorbed may “leak” out of the intestines into the blood stream.

And as our intestines have a layer of lymphatics, a leaky gut can  trigger an autoimmune reaction, which can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal bloating, excessive gas and cramps, fatigue, food sensitivities, joint pain, skin rashes, and autoimmunity.

It’s a vicious cycle that is helped by removal of the offending food and repair w/ L- glutamine, an amino acid that helps maintain intestinal metabolism and function, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), selectively stimulate the growth and activity of “friendly” bacteria in the intestinal tract such as Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis, FOS also have been shown to help restore and maintain mucosal integrity and aid in the adequate absorption of calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc.

Adjustment of the spinal segments which help innervate the gut, stimulation of Chinese acupoints on meridrians involved w/ digestion and the neuro-lymphatic and neuro-vascular points are also part of the patient’s treatment; this offers a whole body approach to the patient’s problem.

Dr Vittoria Repetto, is a Chiropractor as well as a practitioner of Applied Kinesiology. Vittoria practices in New York City. If you would like to find out more about Applied Kinesiology as well as other cutting edge health topics, I recommend taking a look at Dr.Vittoria Repetto’s blog. You will find it at : https://drvittoriarepetto.wordpress.com/

Applied Kinesiology is a system that evaluates: structural, chemical and mental aspects of a person’s health. The combined terms applied and kinesiology describe the basis of this system, which is the use of manual muscle testing to evaluate body function through the dynamics of the musculoskeletal system.

In general, the applied Kinesiologist finds a muscle that tests weak and then attempts to determine why that muscle is not functioning properly. The practitioner will then evaluate and apply the therapy that will best eliminate the muscle weakness and help the patient. In some cases, the practitioner may test for environmental or food sensitivities by using a previously strong muscle to find what weakens it.

Treatments may involve specific joint manipulation or mobilization, various myofascial therapies, cranial techniques, meridian and acupuncture skills, clinical nutrition, dietary management, as well as counseling.

The Beginning of My Journey as a Healer

It would seem that I have been heading this way for quite awhile. My journey to become a healer started with a journey of healing myself. I started this journey as a constipated child who had a cold at least once a month and whose ragweed allergy was getting worse every year.

At 18, I was in the Italian Alps; a cousin introduced to a whole grain product called muesli. It was my first un-constipated summer. Back in New York City I was having a hard time finding this product until I found this hole-in the-wall health food store. I had my first taste of carrot juice and left with the muesli, some brown rice and a resolution not to overcook my vegetables.

In the next seven years, my journey included changes in my diet, martial arts and studies of nutrition, herbs and homeopathics. During this time I was seriously thinking about what to do for the rest of my life. People around me were always asking me for back rubs; saying what good hands I had So in 1976, I started studying massage.

Also at this time, I had intensified my martial arts studies and was having muscle strains and spasms that no amount of stretching or massage seemed to help. A fellow student suggested that I go see “old Doc Christie” – a 75 yr old chiropractor whose mind was as clear as her body was strong. I would sit for hours watching her adjust her patients and listening to her talk about subluxations, nerve energy flow, spinal manipulations, extremity manipulations, enemas and liver detox. My ragweed allergy was improving.

My martial arts teacher told me about applied kinesiology; it was a technique that incorporated chiropractic with muscle balancing, organ neurovascular & neuro-lymphatic points, cranial-sacral work, nutritional consultation and acupressure therapy. In order to do this work, you couldn’t do assembly line chiropractic. You had to spend time: do a complete exam and really get to the different factors involved in the patient’s complaint.

In chiropractic college and in my practice, I have polished this idea like a diamond. I have incorporated studies on intestinal wall integrity, IgG food allergies and the interconnections between these and the immune system, the respiratory system, low back pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and degenerative disc problems.

And by the way my ragweed allergy is long gone.

The above appeared in Free Spirit magazine; Feb-March 1998
