A NYC Chiropractor/ Applied Kinesiologist Talks About How Your Multi and/or Calcium Supplement May Be Causing Problems

One of the protocols I perform when I have a new patient is I look at the labels of the multiple vitamin and calcium supplements they are taking as their daily routine.

In this blog, I’ll be talking about two minerals that may be critical to your health.

One of the most common problems is the use of Calcium Carbonate in the supplement they are taking. Calcium Carbonate is an antacid which a lot of vitamin companies use because it is cheap.

The problem is that you need acid in your stomach in order to digest your food and absorb vitamins and mineral from both your diet and your supplements. Taking Calcium Carbonate stops that digestive process.

Decreasing (or completely getting rid of) the acid in your stomach means that you can’t digest and absorb not only Calcium but protein, iron, Vitamin B12 and zinc.

So basically you are setting yourself up for osteoporosis, fatigue, muscle wasting, iron anemia, memory problems and poor wound healing to mention a few.

And because of the lack of acid, you may feel like you have heartburn and think that you have too acid and take more antacids; further compounding the problem.

The other major mineral in patient’s supplements that I’ll be taking about is iron.

Unless you are a menstruating women w a heavy flow or an extreme athlete or on an extreme starvation diet, iron supplementation may not be necessary.

Iron is present in animal protein and beans, legumes and some leafy green vegetables. And a lot of packaged foods like cereal and dairy and nut milk products have added iron.

Too much iron can accumulate in organs like the brain, the pancreas, gonads, pituitary, liver, the joints and heart and cause problems like toxic liver, arthritis, dementia, etc

Lab tests for excess iron include serum ferritin level and transferrin saturation; regular anemia testing will not show the problem.

A great way to keep your iron levels from getting too high from added iron in your food is to donate blood (and great karma).

There are vitamin companies that make multi-vitamin minerals that do not have added iron; one company that I recommend and use is Metagenics. (www.metagenics.com)

I also recommend taking a supplement w either MCHC and Calcium Citrate for your calcium. Please check out another blog Getting Enough Calcium Into Your Bones? Ten Facts You Need to Know!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 9,400 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 16 years to get that many views.

A NYC Chiropractor/Applied Kinesiologist Talks About Bad Posture & Body Pains

We’re all guilty of it. Bad posture comes with our everyday tasks, when we are not paying attention to how we are sitting, standing, lying down or driving. And our spine and the muscles associated w/ our spine take more of a beating than we realize.

Posture is not just about standing up straight, it’s about keeping your spine aligned with its natural shape and curves and the equal pull on our spines by the spinal and back muscles. Bad posture can throw off your spine’s balance, allowing your body to be more prone to injury. In an average day common incorrect posture positions can change the balance of our spine and the back muscles.

When we slouch, the natural spinal curves are either reversed or exaggerated and this puts more stress on our spine and muscles. For example, if we hang our head and neck down, we increase the strain of the muscles balancing the weight of our head and increase the strain of the muscles holding our rib cage up. Some mucles become too tight and others too loose. Such an imbalance can lead to tension headaches, mid-back pains, neck pains and shoulder pains.

Similarly, low back pain can be caused by misalignment of the spine and unbalanced muscle pull on both the front , back and sides of our torsis due to bad posture and habits.

Chiropractor and especially Applied Kinesiologists are trained to spot and test for these muscle imbalances and correct these imbalances so please do seek one out if you are having body pains and in the meantime, make an effort to be conscious of your posture.

What Do The Codes on The Stickers on Fruits & Some Veggies Mean?

You know those annoying stickers on fruits and some vegetables?

Well those stickers have more of a function than for the cashier to scan for the price of the item. The price lookup number of PLU code will also tell you whatever the fruit was genetically modified, organically grown or conventionally grown with use of pesticides and other chemicals.

Here what you should know:

Conventionally grown w/ use of pesticides & other chemicals will be four numbers that start with the number 4

Organically grown fruit will  be five numbers that start  w/ the  number 9

Genetically modified fruit will be five numbers that start w/ the number 8

And by the way, here’s a link to the Environmental Working Group  with a list of the fruits and veggies w/ the least pesticides to the ones w/ the most pesticides that you may want to definitely buy organic http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/summary/

:

What is Applied Kinesiology?

Applied Kinesiology (AK) can be defined as the clinical application of the study of movement and function; it is functional neurology.

AK is a system of testing and treatment that is used to assess the body’s functional aberrations.

These functional aberrations may be but not limited to:

    •   Muscular
    • Neurological
    • Vascular
    • Osseous
    • Lymphatic
    • Respiratory
    • Digestive
    • Endocrine
    • Imbalance in the Chinese Meridian systems
  •

Therapies to induce or restore individual normal function include but not limited to:

    • Chiropractic adjustive therapy
    • Cranial techniques
    • Therapeutic massage modalities
    • Reflex therapies
    • Acupuncture therapies
    • Exercise & stretches
    • Nutritional supplementation
    • Emotional support or modalities
  • Lifestyle changes

With the aim of decreasing cumulative noxious stimuli below threshold and allowing the body to heal itself.

AK does not replace standard examination procedures such as neurological and orthopedic testing, blood laboratory work or X-rays but rather it is another examination tool at the doctor’s disposal.

Applied Kinesiology (AK) is a continually evolving system that provides the doctor with the skills and knowledge to purposefully, systematically and logically ascertain the optimal treatment of the patient. AK embraces the work of all individuals and disciplines who endeavor to diminish the suffering of humanity.

AK attempts to unify such diverse knowledge and techniques into a usable scientific system for one purpose: To bring patients to a higher level of health and help them to actualize their potential.(Thanks to Dr. Charles for the use of his definition.)

Applied Kinesiology Is Not:

Testing nutritional needs by holding bottles in your hand or placing pills on the skin.

Touch for health or any other forms of evaluation using muscle testing as a simple yes-no answer system.

Testing using mental telepathy.

A simplistic cookie cutter approach to treatment.

How a NYC Chiropractor/Applied Kinesiologist Treats Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

These days with all our computer usage, we are very aware of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome which consists of weakness, numbness or tingling or pain in the first 3 fingers in your hand. The problem is caused by pressure on the median nerve as it travels through a “tunnel” in our wrist formed by the bones of our wrist and a ligament called the flexor retinaculum. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Carpal-Tunnel.svg) The pressure can be caused by structural collapse of the tunnel by over-extension of the wrist as in over-use of computers, hammering or usa wrench or narrowing due to arthritis or fluid in the tunnel caused by diabetes or hypothyroidism

As a Doctor of Chiropractic and an Applied Kinesiologist, I would first rule out diabetes and hypothyroid by patient history, signs & symptoms and blood and urine tests. Compression of the wrist in arthritis would make the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome worse instead of making it better.

Treatment of the syndrome involves adjustment of the wrist bones, balancing and strengthening of the muscles surrounding the wrist esp. the muscles involved in flexion. A wrist brace would be used for support and exercises for the wrist would be recommended. Nutritional support for the nerves and ligaments and a natural anti-inflammatory would be recommended to speed up the healing following the structural correction.

By utilizing applied kinesiology and chiropractic, we can balance the body’s structure and chemistry utilizing and can solve many health problems by addressing the cause. Please feel free to call  to schedule a consultation to discuss this or any other health issues you may have.
