Why Sometimes Being Sick Is The Healthiest Thing You Can Do For Yourself!!

Yes I know you are scratching your head over that title, wondering what the heck am I talking about.

A case in point happened this weekend and the following days in my office.

Last Saturday afternoon, I noted that I had a sensation of nausea and by the time I got home, I had the “runs.” When I took my temperature, I was 100F –another sign that my body was fighting some sort of infection but not “medically significant” or dangerous. http://www.medicinenet.com/aches_pain_fever/article.htm

So I heated up some chicken broth, added some extra sea salt to it and drank a lot of water in order to help aid whatever my body was trying to get rid of and prevent any dehydration that would have made me sicker. The rest of Saturday as well as Sunday was a cycle of sleep (the body’s best anti-oxidant), waking up to go to the bathroom, liquid intake, work on my neuro-lymphatic pts and acu-points for my intestines, television, bathroom, lymphatic/acu-points,  sleep, liquid, sleep, etc.

But by Sunday night, my temperature was back to normal and the trips to the bathroom were getting more spaced apart. On Monday, I got a friend to stop by and pick up some “sticky rice” at a local Chinese restaurant to help to start to slow up the runs. Tuesday, I was able to go out to a food store for some chicken & noodle soup, some yogurt and a bottle of Pepto-Bismol. By the time evening arrived and only one bowel movement in the mid afternoon & normal temperature I knew that I could go into work the next day.

At work on Weds, one of my newer patients came in complaining of a lung & bronchial infection for which he was taking antibiotics which started after he was treated for diarrhea while on a trip with corticosteroids. In other words, immune suppression of his natural intestinal response led to a lung infection.

As an Applied Kinesiologist I know that the Lung and the Large intestine are Yin /Yang partners in the body’s health.

For people like myself in non-allopathic medicine (chiropractic, acupuncturist, naturopaths, etc) symptoms are not only clues to what disease or problem is affecting the patient but also symptoms can express the body’s attempt to heal itself. Therefore symptoms should not be covered up by treatment. Suppression of symptoms did not heal the body or cure the disease, the illness just moved to another area

In our modern society, we have been trained (mostly) by the pharmaceutical companies to equate symptoms of illness w/ an illness or a disease that needs to be suppressed.

Have heartburn; take an antacid or proton inhibitor..effective in the short  term but can cause if used long term diseases like osteoporosis and dementia due to nutrition deficiencies caused by the heartburn drugs.

Instead how about changing your diet or seeing if the body needs a hiatal hernia fixed or some digestive enzymes.

So the next time, you have vague symptoms like coughing, slight fever, diarrhea, tiredness, etc, please instead of masking these symptoms with drugs, think about what may be causing the symptoms and consult a non-allopathic healer to help your body fight what is causing the symptoms.

A NYC Chiropractor’s/ Applied Kinesiologist’s Office Statement to Her New Patients

Welcome to My Office!

You have entrusted me with your health and wellness. I take that responsibility seriously by continuing my study of the latest chiropractic, applied kinesiological and nutritional research in order to provide the best in care and service to you.

Here you will find a blend of old fashioned doctoring where you are listened to and treated w/ courtesy and dignity, where your time is valuable, where you are not part of today’s assembly line health care and where I use Applied Kinesiology (AK) as part of my practice.

AK, as founded by Dr. George Goodheart, incorporates under its umbrella the many branches of holistic healing including chiropractic, extremity adjustment, muscle balancing, cranial-sacral therapy, TMJ (jaw) tech., nutrition, acu-point therapy, neuro-vascular, neuro-lymphatic therapies and more.

My goal is to motivate and help you reach a higher level of health and to actualize your potential. I do this through the ability to determine why the body is not functioning as a system, to get the body working together as it is intended, and help you clear stressors that often impede health and happiness.

I believe that good health is a process and not an event. Therefore I ask that you take responsibility in the healing process as you learn why your health problem has occurred and what you can do to help stop and reverse the problem.

In this process, you might be a little sore after the first or second treatment as I am trying to restore the normal biomechanical motion and proper nerve, muscle and organ function that may have been lost due to years of  bad posture, trauma, infections, faulty nutrition and other stresses.

In other words, I am trying to remove an unhealthy pattern that has developed over the years and this pattern takes awhile to be removed, sometimes a temporary minor relapse may even occur.

Because of this, I will be recommending that you come in for a series of treatments perhaps once a week for a month and than every two weeks until the pattern is broken and health restored. In order to help in this process, I may also be recommending some nutritional supplements, exercises, stretches and lifestyle changes. When I have restored your body to a more normal and healthy function, I will then be recommending a maintenance / preventative program for you.

I’m looking forward to working with you in this process.

A NYC Chiropractor’s Thoughts on “Not So Real” Food

Today in the NYTimes: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/03/weekinreview/03harris.html?_r=2 which talks about taste tests done on foods that don’t contains artificial colors/dyes.

“Without the artificial coloring FD&C Yellow No. 6, Cheetos Crunchy Cheese Flavored Snacks would look like the shriveled larvae of a large insect. Not surprisingly, in taste tests, people derived little pleasure from eating them.”

And I’m thinking to myself as I read ” What about using natural colorings”  and there at the bottom of the article was

“As yet, natural colorings have not proven to be a good alternative. They are generally not as bright, cheap or stable as artificial colorings, which can remain vibrant for years. Natural colorings often fade within days.”

And I have to think how wrong it is to eat a so called food that will be vibrant for years. After all we know that as soon as you pick a fruit,  for example, that it starts to lose nutrients. So what nutrients might be left after years??

Ok, you say but I want some potato chips! Ok how about doing what Michael Pollan suggests; make them yourself. I’d make mine w/ new potatoes and olive oil. The coloring would be natural, some nutrients from the potato and olive oil and no fading because I’d eat it all up.

Let me know what you think!

Thoughts of a NYC Chiropractor on Potassium Iodide vs Radiation Poisoning & Iodine in General

Here’s a great article : How to protect yourself from radiation by Hyla Cass M.D. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/hyla-cass-md/radiation-risks-and-prote_b_836363.html
Now much radiation the west coast and the east coast will get depends on what reactor explores, how much fail out there is and how the  weather (wind, rain) will carry this radiation around the globe.  But I thought that I should point some things out about KI and iodine in general.

One needs to know that large amts. of (mgs) potassium iodide (most vitamin companies use 75 mcg – 150 mcg of KI for their iodine source) may be hurtful to people w/ skin disorders like dermatitis herpetiformis or urticaria vasculitis or people taking synthyroid (or like medications) or have an auto-immune thyroid problem or pregrant women and infants;  these people should consult their doctor before starting .

Side effects of taking KI are nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, or stomach pain; mild skin rash; or
a metallic taste in the mouth.

In my opinion the American diet is low on iodine and I fear that it will become more so as we limit our intake of salt ( iodized salt). Did you know that Pasteurization destroys approximately 20% of the Iodine content of pasteurized foods.  Did you know that potassium iodate, a dough conditioner which added 150 mcg of iodide per slice, .was replaced in the 1970’s w/ bromine (iodine antagonist and goitrogenic substance)

Did you know that the Japanese population consumes 13.8mg of iodine/day and has very low cases of breast cancer, thyroid problems and low cases of every type of cancer except stomach cancer.

So I do advise people to take in more iodine in their diets -sea veggies such as Kelp, Dulse, Kombu, Arame, Wakame, Hijike, Norimiso and seafood are great sources of iodine as well as egg yolks (Attention all you egg white fans).

And for more help vs radiation, know that Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, can help protect body tissues. And also reishi and cordyceps mushrooms  and antioxidantscan help the body defend itself from radiation damage.

For my thoughts on iodized sea salt vs iodized table salt, please read: http://drvittoriarepetto.wordpress.com/2010/03/31/to-salt-or-not-to-salt-that-is-the-question/

How a NYC Applied Kinesiologist Treats Heartburn or Acid Reflex

Heartburn, also known as acid reflex, is a burning sensation in the chest, just behind the breastbone or just below the breastbone. The sensation of pain or discomfort often rises in the chest and may radiate to the neck, throat, or angle of the jaw. The sensation gets worse on lying down or bending over.

Chronic heartburn is called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a relatively new classification of chronic heartburn (less than 10 yrs) which seems to have appeared at the same time as two new classifications of drugs H-2-receptor blockers and Proton pump inhibitors which were stronger and provided longer relief than similar antacids.

However  all three mentioned drug classifications by different mechanisms stop the production of stomach acid; stomach acid which we need in order to not only digest food but help us absorb essential nutrients like Calcium and Vitamin B12.

Now one of the possible causes of heartburn or acid reflex is a hiatal hernia. When one part of the internal body pushes into another part where it should not be, it is called a hernia.  The hiatus is an a opening in the diaphragm muscle that allows for the passage of the esophagus as it attaches to the stomach and the passage of the aorta, the inferior vena cava and nerves.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaphragm_%28anatomy%29 and observe the way the diaphragm muscle is constructed. There are muscle fibers that wrap around both sides of the esophagus.

A hiatal hernia is when due to diaphragm weakness, the stomach slips upward through the hiatus into the space where the esophagus is causing both nerve irritation and slippage of stomach acid into the esophagus causing the sensation of heartburn or GERD.

In applied kinesiology, we affect the diaphragm by manipulation of the 4th & 5th cervical vertebrae which  then forms the phrenic nerve and innervates the diaphragm and the stomach and esophagus vi a manipulation of the greater splanchnic nerve  at 5th to 9th thoracic vertebrae and working the

neuro-lymphatics and neuro-vasculars for these organs.

The cranial system is checked for involvement of the parasympathetic (vagus nerve).  Acupoints  for the stomach, and lung may checked for involvement.

We would gently after these procedures try to gently manipulate the movement of the stomach back into its proper place and then strengthen the diaphragm muscles; give breathing exercises for the patient to do at home to stop the hernia from happening again are  included as well as nutrients like zinc to heal any erosions from the reflex of acid.

How an Applied Kinesiologist Uses Neuro Lympathics to Improve Health

First before we talk about Neuro-lympathics, we need to talk about lymphatics and the lymphatic system, what they are and their role in your health.

Lymph is a clear colorless liquid carrying microscopic particles such as white blood cells, food, protein, and other substances such as water necessary for the cell’s health; also it may contain bacteria , viruses, toxics and other foreign material. This lymph is collected by a system of collecting tubes located near our organs, and muscles that drain the lymph is called the lymphatic system.

In this system of collecting tubes are lymph nodes; lymph nodes produce a type of white blood cell that engulfs and destroys invaders like bacteria or viruses. The lymph nodes are concentrated in areas such as the neck, shoulder axilla, elbow, groin, behind the knee, and in the abdomen. Most people at one time or another have had swollen glands around the neck; the lymph nodes are actively helping to control the infection

So your lymphatic system has two major functions: to maintain the fluid balance in our bodies and to help w/ our immunity.

There are neurologically controlled muscle fibers in the large lymph vessels. Contraction of the vessels helps propel lymph drainage into the venous system.

Neurologic reflex points thought to affect lymphatic drainage were developed by an osteopath, Frank Chapman, in the 1930s who believed that manipulation of tender spots in the body could increase lymphatic drainage in different organs and improve health

Goodheart who founded Applied Kinesiology started working w/ Chapman’s points and found that working these points also affected muscles as well as organ drainage. Goodheart started observing (for example) that points for stomach drainage also helped the pectoralis clav. muscle. Goodheart continued his research and found that there was a organ-muscle- lymphatic connection for each organ and muscle.

For example: let’s talk about muscular imbalance and postural distortion in the upper chest and neck region. Imbalance in this area may interfere with the proper movement of one’s rib cage in respiration. Movement of the rib cage, along with diaphragm contraction, makes a major contribution to lymphatic drainage; it is especially important in the vital function of lung lymphatic drainage.

Chronic muscle strains & back pain, chronic infections, how much water is the patient drinking, poor circulation, nighttime urination, tingling in extremities. allergies are all clues to an Applied Kinesiologist that the lymphatic system may be involved and that stimulation of neuro-lymphatics points are needed to help the patient.

Knee Feels Weak Despite Exercise: Reactive Muscles and How Applied Kinesiology Can Help

You have been working out regularly but your rt. knee feels weak and tired after walking a few blocks and it feels like your rt. knee is moving inward as you extend it.

You exercise the quadriceps more and stretch the adductor muscle but it does not help.

So what is happening?

A muscle, in this case an adductor muscle, may be shutting off your quadriceps causing your leg to rotate inwards and your quadriceps to feel weak.

In applied kinesiology, we call this a reactive muscle and it can happen in any part of the body.

What is need is to neutralize the over-active adductor muscles.

In applied kinesiology, we first therapy localize the suspected reactive muscle.  Therapy localization is a diagnostic procedure where the patient touchs the suspected reactive muscle and we use muscle testing to see if that is an involved muscle.

We then correct the over-active muscle spindle in the middle of the muscle or the golgi tendons at the origin & insertion of the muscle.

Spinal Pain Not Being Helped? See An Applied Kinesiologist; It May Be A Fixation

At least 5-8 times a year, I’ll get a patient in that tells me that they have seen a chiropractor for their upper neck pain (or another part of their spine) but it never resolved.

I smile and do the usual orthopedic and neurological testing along with muscle testing neck muscles like the cervical erector, the SCM & the Scalene Anticus.

And then I go and test muscles bilaterally such as the Psoas muscle a major muscle of locomotion or the Gluteus Maximus; both of these muscle being strong postural muscles

And sure enough one of these muscles will test weak bilaterally. I then ask the patient to place two fingers (or therapy localize) on two different segments (vertebrae) bilaterally and then re-test.

If the muscle being tested is strengthened, then I know that the problem is not a subluxation where one or two vertebrae are misaligned and fixed in that position but a fixation where two or three vertebrae are fixed on each other.

Adjusting each vertebrae individually does nothing until you adjust both vertebrae at the same time in order to break up the fixation.

Your local certified Applied Kinesiologist who is either a chiropractor or an osteopath has trained in this technique and can help you greatly.

Osteoporosis -New Concern for HIV Patients

An important article that shows that M.D.’s need to start learning about nutrition.
The doctor’s recommendations in this article tells patients to take calcuim carbonate, eat dairy & sardines for Ca sources and to  take bisphosphonates for osteoporosis.
Unfortunately the recommendation of calcium carbonate is a joke since you need acid in your stomach and calcium carbonate acts as an antacid (what Tums is made from) so you do not absorb any Ca from this source

The article also does not mention that you also need Mg for yr. bones as well as other trace minerals.

Also fails to mention that some of the best sources of calcium is green leafy veggies, almonds, seaweed and beans; esp important if you are lactose intolerant and can’t use dairy products

And as for taking bisphosphonates, even the FDA is updating the public regarding information previously communicated describing the risk of atypical fractures of the thigh, known as subtrochanteric and diaphyseal femur fractures, in patients who take bisphosphonates for osteoporosis. http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm229009.htm
