A NYC Chiropractor & Applied Kinesiologist Talks About Getting 1/2 of your Calcium From Food

If you have been following my blogs, you know that as a Doctor of Chiropractic and an Applied Kinesiologist I am interested in nutrition. In this blog, I am recommeding that at least of your calcium intake (daily intake – 900mg- 1200 mg) come from the food that you eat. Please see below for a listing of calcium in common foods.

There are reasons for this: one is that fresh unprocessed foods contain other minerals besides calcium like magnesium, potassium and boron that help form the collagen matrix lattice in your bones that the calcium attachs itself to.

These freah foods like green leafy vegetables and yogurt contain Vitamin K; one of the funcions of this vitamin is to keep calcium out of your joints and arteries. Other food like dairy products, eggs, fish contain Vitamin D which helps the calcium attach to the bone.

In another blog, I talked about being careful about what kind of calcium is in your supplements as some calcium supplements can prevent absorbtion of calcium, weaken your bones and create other health problems. A NYC Chiropractor Talks About Nutrient Depletion Due To Pharmaceuticals

As a Doctor of Chiropractic and an Applied Kinesiologist, I’m interested in holistic health care and eating healthy in order to promote life-long wellness.

I do realize that occasionally we need to take pharmaceuticals like for example antibiotics.

But we need to be aware that medications can cause nutrient deletion especially if patients are on pharmaceuticals for a extended period of time.

Here’s a list of common pharmaceuticals and the nutrients that will deplete from your body.

W long term use of antacids, calcium, Vitamins B12, B1, D, folic acid, iron & zinc

W antibiotics, nutrient depletion of biotin, potassium, Vitamin B1-2-3-6-12, C, E, K, inositol, magnesium, zinc, lactobacillus & bifidobacteria

W antidepressants, nutrient depletion of EPA (increased need), Vitamin B2, 12, D, folic acid, sodium

W anti-diabetics, nutrient depletion of VitaminB12, folic acid & CoQ10

W use of anti-histamines, increased need for EPA-DHA

W use of anti-retrovirals, nutrient depletion of zinc, cooper, Vitamin B12 & carnitine

W use of anti-hypertensives, nutrient depletion of CoQ10, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, zinc, calcium, magnesium & Vitamin B1

W use of anti-inflammatories, nutrient depletion of folic acid, iron, potassium, sodium. Vitamin C & glutathione

W use of bronchodilators , nutrient depletion of potassium

W use of cholesterol –lowering drugs, you lose CoQ10, beta carotene, calcium, folic acid, iron, magnesium, Vitamins A B12 D E K & phosphorus

W use of corticosteroids, nutrient depletion of calcium, folic acid, magnesium, potassium, selenium, Vitamins A, B6, C, D, K & zinc

W use of diuretics, nutrient depletion of calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, Vitamin B1, B6 , C, zinc, CoQ10 & folic acid

W use of colchicines for gout, nutrient depletion of Vitamins A, D, B12, folic acid, iron & potassium

W use of hormone replacement, nutrient depletion of Vitamin B6 B1, B2 B12 C biotin pantothenic acid & magnesium

W use of laxatives, nutrient depletion of Vitamin A D E Calcium sodium potassium

W oral contraceptives, u lose beta carotene Vitamin B1 B2 B3 B6 B12 C folic acid biotin pantothenic acid Magnesium Zinc Tryptophan Tyrosine

W psychotherapeutics, nutrient depletion of Vitamin B2 & CoQ10

W Rheumatoid arthritis drugs, nutrient depletion of folic acid

W use of sleep aid drugs, nutrient depletion of biotin, calcium folic acid Vitamin B1, B12, D & K

A NYC Chiropractor Recommends How to Do A Healthy Liver Detox.

A NYC Chiropractor Recommends How to Do A Healthy Liver Detox.

I have this big old liver spot on my left hand, it’s on Large Intestine point 4 and I’ve had it since I was 28 yrs old (I’m 60 now) and it is the result of a badly constructed “liver detox”

The liver detox was one involving drinking only apple juice and doing enemas for 3 days and we are still seeing this type of cleanse or detox in various reincarnations and they all involve depriving oneself of nutrients which does a lot more hurt than good.

Let me explain: the liver is the major way that our bodies remove toxins like heavy metals, industrial compounds and pollutants that can be associated w/ fatigue, muscle pain and weakness, cancer, headaches, nerve degeneration, headaches, rashes, loss of memory, etc.

The liver does this in two Phases; Phase 1 involves oxidation and Phase 2 involves conjugation.

Oxidation involves using oxygen and enzymes to turn a toxin (most toxins are fat-soluble) into a water-soluble substance so they can be more easily executed by the liver or kidneys. Foods that can help Phase 1 do its job are cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and kale, oranges, caraway seeds; nutrients that help are Vitamin C  & E , zinc, selenium and cooper

However the product of this Phase 1 can be even more toxic so the liver needs to process the Phase 1 via a Phase 2 process called conjugation. Conjugation involves combining the oxidized compounds w/ sulfur, amino acids (building block of protein) and organic acids  and  methylation  via Vitamin B12, choline & folic acid and generation of glutathione via N-acetylcysteine so  toxic products can be executed in the bile which then leaves the body via the large intestine.

Phase 2 is helped by adequate protein  as found in nuts, seeds, beans, meat, fish , eggs and dairy, alliums  as found in garlic, onions, citrus, cruciferous vegetables, bioflavonoids as found in peppers, celery, carrots oregano, rosemary, olive oil, pomegranates, milk thistle and cruciferous vegetables.

Medium chain triglycerides, mono-unsaturated fats, Vitamin B1, B2, niacin, B5 and magnesium help with the energy production needed to perform these tasks

And of course, the body needs to have adequate fiber in order to move these toxins out of the body quickly before they are reabsorbed.

So you can see that water or juice fasts are harmful to the body as they deplete the body of the nutrients need for a healthy detoxification.

I now do  a “spring cleaning –liver detox” week in which only foods that are organic /glass fed, etc are eaten  and I add a liver support program that has all the Phase 1 and Phase nutrients (from Metagenics http://www.metagenics.com/products/a-z-products-list/UltraClear ) that my liver needs for detoxification.

For patients who have altered detoxification function may be due to genetic predisposition, a history of chronic nutrient insufficiency, and/or toxin overload, which can result in a build-up of stored toxins and a subsequent increase in symptoms and/or tissue damage, I recommend http://www.metagenics.com/products/a-z-products-list/UltraClear-PLUS .

And I know that I (or my patients) will not be getting any more big old liver spots from a badly constructed liver detox.

How a NYC Applied Kinesiologist Uses Neurovascular Pts for Better Physical and Emotional Wellbeing.

First what are neurovascular points?

Neurovascular points are points discovered in the 1930’s by chiropractor Dr. Terence Bennett. He had found via x-ray fluoroscope that stimulating these points would increase blood circulation to the organs that were associated with these points. The increased blood flow would increase the flow of nutrients and O2 to the associated organ and have the positive effect of improving the function of the associated organ.

Dr. George Goodheart who founded Applied Kinesiology took up Bennett’s work and noticed that the points could also turn weak muscles on. Dr. Goodheart then observed that many internal organs had reflex connections in the muscles and joints and along with a cross reference via the Chinese acupuncture system that certain muscles were associated w/ certain organs

Neurovascular points are mainly located on the face and head; they are stimulated by lightly pressing on the point until you feel a pulse and as most of these points have a right and left side on the head (or face).you would keep on pressing until the pulses matched each other.

One of the most well known points is used in Emotional Release Technique. These points are associated with the Pectoralis Major muscle and the Stomach. These associations are interesting as in our culture we talk about getting our stomach in a knot or about having chest tightness when we are upset. The points are the first two bumps on our forehead; see PMC at http://backintoit.com/tag/goodheart/

The technique is simple: think about what is bothering you as you hold these points and then make a statement as how you will solve the problem. For example, if you have anxiety about talking to someone who always makes you angry; think about why they make you angry and then make a statement such as “I will not let “name” make me angry, his issues are his and not mine” or something simpler. Say the statement out loud as you hold the pulse and keep on repeating the phase until you feel the pulses becoming equal.

Try it and let me know!

Why Sometimes Being Sick Is The Healthiest Thing You Can Do For Yourself!!

Yes I know you are scratching your head over that title, wondering what the heck am I talking about.

A case in point happened this weekend and the following days in my office.

Last Saturday afternoon, I noted that I had a sensation of nausea and by the time I got home, I had the “runs.” When I took my temperature, I was 100F –another sign that my body was fighting some sort of infection but not “medically significant” or dangerous. http://www.medicinenet.com/aches_pain_fever/article.htm

So I heated up some chicken broth, added some extra sea salt to it and drank a lot of water in order to help aid whatever my body was trying to get rid of and prevent any dehydration that would have made me sicker. The rest of Saturday as well as Sunday was a cycle of sleep (the body’s best anti-oxidant), waking up to go to the bathroom, liquid intake, work on my neuro-lymphatic pts and acu-points for my intestines, television, bathroom, lymphatic/acu-points,  sleep, liquid, sleep, etc.

But by Sunday night, my temperature was back to normal and the trips to the bathroom were getting more spaced apart. On Monday, I got a friend to stop by and pick up some “sticky rice” at a local Chinese restaurant to help to start to slow up the runs. Tuesday, I was able to go out to a food store for some chicken & noodle soup, some yogurt and a bottle of Pepto-Bismol. By the time evening arrived and only one bowel movement in the mid afternoon & normal temperature I knew that I could go into work the next day.

At work on Weds, one of my newer patients came in complaining of a lung & bronchial infection for which he was taking antibiotics which started after he was treated for diarrhea while on a trip with corticosteroids. In other words, immune suppression of his natural intestinal response led to a lung infection.

As an Applied Kinesiologist I know that the Lung and the Large intestine are Yin /Yang partners in the body’s health.

For people like myself in non-allopathic medicine (chiropractic, acupuncturist, naturopaths, etc) symptoms are not only clues to what disease or problem is affecting the patient but also symptoms can express the body’s attempt to heal itself. Therefore symptoms should not be covered up by treatment. Suppression of symptoms did not heal the body or cure the disease, the illness just moved to another area

In our modern society, we have been trained (mostly) by the pharmaceutical companies to equate symptoms of illness w/ an illness or a disease that needs to be suppressed.

Have heartburn; take an antacid or proton inhibitor..effective in the short  term but can cause if used long term diseases like osteoporosis and dementia due to nutrition deficiencies caused by the heartburn drugs.

Instead how about changing your diet or seeing if the body needs a hiatal hernia fixed or some digestive enzymes.

So the next time, you have vague symptoms like coughing, slight fever, diarrhea, tiredness, etc, please instead of masking these symptoms with drugs, think about what may be causing the symptoms and consult a non-allopathic healer to help your body fight what is causing the symptoms.

A NYC Chiropractor’s/ Applied Kinesiologist’s Office Statement to Her New Patients

Welcome to My Office!

You have entrusted me with your health and wellness. I take that responsibility seriously by continuing my study of the latest chiropractic, applied kinesiological and nutritional research in order to provide the best in care and service to you.

Here you will find a blend of old fashioned doctoring where you are listened to and treated w/ courtesy and dignity, where your time is valuable, where you are not part of today’s assembly line health care and where I use Applied Kinesiology (AK) as part of my practice.

AK, as founded by Dr. George Goodheart, incorporates under its umbrella the many branches of holistic healing including chiropractic, extremity adjustment, muscle balancing, cranial-sacral therapy, TMJ (jaw) tech., nutrition, acu-point therapy, neuro-vascular, neuro-lymphatic therapies and more.

My goal is to motivate and help you reach a higher level of health and to actualize your potential. I do this through the ability to determine why the body is not functioning as a system, to get the body working together as it is intended, and help you clear stressors that often impede health and happiness.

I believe that good health is a process and not an event. Therefore I ask that you take responsibility in the healing process as you learn why your health problem has occurred and what you can do to help stop and reverse the problem.

In this process, you might be a little sore after the first or second treatment as I am trying to restore the normal biomechanical motion and proper nerve, muscle and organ function that may have been lost due to years of  bad posture, trauma, infections, faulty nutrition and other stresses.

In other words, I am trying to remove an unhealthy pattern that has developed over the years and this pattern takes awhile to be removed, sometimes a temporary minor relapse may even occur.

Because of this, I will be recommending that you come in for a series of treatments perhaps once a week for a month and than every two weeks until the pattern is broken and health restored. In order to help in this process, I may also be recommending some nutritional supplements, exercises, stretches and lifestyle changes. When I have restored your body to a more normal and healthy function, I will then be recommending a maintenance / preventative program for you.

I’m looking forward to working with you in this process.

A NYC Chiropractor’s Thoughts on “Not So Real” Food

Today in the NYTimes: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/03/weekinreview/03harris.html?_r=2 which talks about taste tests done on foods that don’t contains artificial colors/dyes.

“Without the artificial coloring FD&C Yellow No. 6, Cheetos Crunchy Cheese Flavored Snacks would look like the shriveled larvae of a large insect. Not surprisingly, in taste tests, people derived little pleasure from eating them.”

And I’m thinking to myself as I read ” What about using natural colorings”  and there at the bottom of the article was

“As yet, natural colorings have not proven to be a good alternative. They are generally not as bright, cheap or stable as artificial colorings, which can remain vibrant for years. Natural colorings often fade within days.”

And I have to think how wrong it is to eat a so called food that will be vibrant for years. After all we know that as soon as you pick a fruit,  for example, that it starts to lose nutrients. So what nutrients might be left after years??

Ok, you say but I want some potato chips! Ok how about doing what Michael Pollan suggests; make them yourself. I’d make mine w/ new potatoes and olive oil. The coloring would be natural, some nutrients from the potato and olive oil and no fading because I’d eat it all up.

Let me know what you think!

Thoughts of a NYC Chiropractor on Potassium Iodide vs Radiation Poisoning & Iodine in General

Here’s a great article : How to protect yourself from radiation by Hyla Cass M.D. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/hyla-cass-md/radiation-risks-and-prote_b_836363.html
Now much radiation the west coast and the east coast will get depends on what reactor explores, how much fail out there is and how the  weather (wind, rain) will carry this radiation around the globe.  But I thought that I should point some things out about KI and iodine in general.

One needs to know that large amts. of (mgs) potassium iodide (most vitamin companies use 75 mcg – 150 mcg of KI for their iodine source) may be hurtful to people w/ skin disorders like dermatitis herpetiformis or urticaria vasculitis or people taking synthyroid (or like medications) or have an auto-immune thyroid problem or pregrant women and infants;  these people should consult their doctor before starting .

Side effects of taking KI are nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, or stomach pain; mild skin rash; or
a metallic taste in the mouth.

In my opinion the American diet is low on iodine and I fear that it will become more so as we limit our intake of salt ( iodized salt). Did you know that Pasteurization destroys approximately 20% of the Iodine content of pasteurized foods.  Did you know that potassium iodate, a dough conditioner which added 150 mcg of iodide per slice, .was replaced in the 1970’s w/ bromine (iodine antagonist and goitrogenic substance)

Did you know that the Japanese population consumes 13.8mg of iodine/day and has very low cases of breast cancer, thyroid problems and low cases of every type of cancer except stomach cancer.

So I do advise people to take in more iodine in their diets -sea veggies such as Kelp, Dulse, Kombu, Arame, Wakame, Hijike, Norimiso and seafood are great sources of iodine as well as egg yolks (Attention all you egg white fans).

And for more help vs radiation, know that Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, can help protect body tissues. And also reishi and cordyceps mushrooms  and antioxidantscan help the body defend itself from radiation damage.

For my thoughts on iodized sea salt vs iodized table salt, please read: http://drvittoriarepetto.wordpress.com/2010/03/31/to-salt-or-not-to-salt-that-is-the-question/
